Adventure Time is filled with touching moments that stay with fans for a long time after watching. Here are 10 of the most emotional quotes.
Adventure Time is one of those shows that’s filled with emotional moments that leave a lasting impact on viewers. The Land of Ooo is filled with amazing characters – some with tragic backstories, some who turn to the dark side, and some who turn good. Some of these moments are blink-and-you-miss-them, while others become a huge part of the episode or the entire show.
With the recent excitement over HBO Max’s Adventure Time: Distant Lands, let’s take a look back on some of the most emotional quotes from the original show that many viewers still think back on.
“Just Watch Over Me Until I Can Find My Way Out Of This Lambrenth In My Brain And Regain My Sanity!” – Simon/Ice King
In “Holly Jolly Secrets Part 2,” the audience is given its first scrap of backstory when watching one of the Ice King’s old VHS tapes. In the tape, he introduces himself as Simon Petrikov and he describes how the crown has been giving him visions, and how his fiance left him.
Viewers see Simon describing his worsening condition. When he cries this out in the last sequence, he’s almost fully transformed. This scene is special because Finn, Jake, and the viewers come to the realization together that there’s more than meets the eye with the Ice King.
“Dating Girls Is Like Riding A Bicycle … If You Mess Up You Could Get Really Hurt Forever Or Hurt Someone You Care About.” – Finn
This is one of the first quotes that pop into viewers’ heads when thinking about the mature concepts in Adventure Time. This quote is from season 5 episode 36 when Finn is coming to terms with his breakup. Soon after, Finn and Jake encounter a “dungeon train” with monsters for them to fight in each car. Jake gets bored after a few hours but Finn wants to keep fighting boss battles on the train.
Dealing with the loss of a relationship is a part of Adventure Time that many young adults identify with. The train going in circles could be interpreted as Finn’s train of thought. Maybe the train was a way for Finn to bask in his simple and carefree childhood days once more before moving on and growing up.
“It Has Cost Me Much, But I Have Learned Lemon Need Not Squeeze Lemon To Survive!” – Soft Lemongrab
In season 5 episode 31, “Too Old”, Finn and Princess Bubblegum enter feudalistic Castle Lemmongrab, where everyone suffers under the Earl’s rule, including the “softer” Lemongrab brother.
When PB and Finn break Lemonhope out of the castle, the softer Lemongrab (who has been eaten at this point) forces himself out of the mouth of his dominant brother, and screams out this dialogue, pleading to Lemonhope to return someday. This quote reflects hope for a better life for the lemon people and condemns dominion over fellow lemons.
“Simon I Know Who I’m Leaving You For … You, Dumb Dumb!” – Betty
In “Betty,” we get more backstory when the crown temporarily loses its magic, transforming Ice King back to Simon. Without magic, Simon can’t survive, so he creates a portal into the past to apologize once more to Betty. Betty jumps through the portal into the present with them, but their reunion is brief. Simon turns back into the Ice King, and Betty begins a quest to find a way to bring Simon back.
Ice King’s tragic backstory sneaks up on viewers. At first, the Ice King is merely a nuisance to other characters, a clumsy trickster that Finn and Jake must defend the princesses from. Slowly the story grows more complex, and more characters get involved. Betty adds more depth to this story, and her eventual descent into madness makes the tale all the more tragic.
“Sometimes You Want Someone, And You Want To Kiss And Be With Them, But You Can’t Because Responsibility Demands Sacrifice.” – Princess Bubblegum
In season 4 episode 16, PB gives Finn some advice. She tries to help Finn understand the dangers of conjuring up intense emotions in Flame Princess, but Finn assumes her efforts are backed by jealousy.
Listening to PB talking about sacrifice hits home. Throughout Adventure Time, Princess Bubblegum is portrayed to be a lonely, dedicated perfectionist. In “Varmints,” she confesses to Marcelene that she’s disappointed in herself for losing control. This quote was coming straight from Princess Bubblegum’s heart, reflecting on her loneliness and sacrifice.
“At Least For A Moment, You Helped Me Feel Like A Princess.” – Princess Cookie
A lot of heavy themes are explored in “Princess Cookie,” including identity, destiny, and even criminal reform. In this episode, Finn and Jake are deployed to help with a hostage situation. Jake opens a dialogue with Baby Snap, the cookie who initiated the hostage.
After learning about how he grew up in an orphanage, only wanting to be a princess, Jake starts to feel empathetic for Baby Snap (who he renames Princess Cookie) and decides to help him escape.
Princess Cookie utters this quote to Jake, thanking him before falling into a canyon to avoid being taken into custody. Needless to say, this episode is very emotional and deals with a lot of mature themes.
“When I Look At You, My Brain Goes All Stupid, And I Just Wanna Hug You, And Sit On The Couch And Play BMO With You.” – Finn
This is a heartfelt quote from “Hot To The Touch” when Finn first professes his feelings for Flame Princess. It’s another quote that fans remember because of how straightforward and honest it is. Most people can relate to how nerve-wracking it is to reveal feelings to a crush, and this quote shows how Finn is brave in every aspect of his life, not just when he’s fighting monsters.
While Finn and Flame Princess’s relationship is short-lived and filled with challenges (since Flame Princess is made of fire) it’s a part of the show that is remembered fondly by fans.
“And Someday, When You Die, I’ll Be The One That Puts You In The Ground.” – Bonnibel Bubblegum
In “Stakes, Part 1,” a dethroned Bubblegum helps Marcelene reverse her vampirism. It’s a big decision since Marcelene will have to give up immortality. Some might set this quote as morbid, but it’s more of Bubblegum’s way of reassuring Marcelene that she will always be there for her.
This quote is a window into the relationship between Bubblegum and Marcelene, which is revealed to be closer than what we see in earlier seasons, when the two rarely interacted. As audiences made their way through the show, Marcy and Bonnie quickly became one of the most shipped couples in Adventure Time.
“Then If He’s Gone, Can You Send Me Back To Before I Met Him So I Won’t Have To Remember This Heartache?”- LSP
In “Bad Timing,” Lumpy Space Princess falls in love with a character named Jonnie. Things are going great for them until Jonnie attends a meeting with Princess Bubblegum. LSP assumes that Jonnie is in love with PB, and tries to use her time-traveling device to send him back in time. When she accidentally deletes Jonnie from time and space, she cries out this line to Princess Bubblegum, who obliges.
This unique episode made a lot of viewers emphasize for LSP since it gave her character more depth. Normally self-centered and annoying, LSP falls in love, becomes vulnerable, and ultimately self-destructive of her relationship. It’s one of the first melancholy episodes featuring LSP, and it does not disappoint.
“Please Forgive Me For Whatever I Do When I Don’t Remember You.” – Simon
Before he became the Ice King, Simon was an intellectual surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, fighting off foes and madness from the crown while protecting Marceline, who was a child at the time. The Ice King remembers nothing from his old life, but Marcelene is left with the memories of their time together.
In “I Remember You,” Marceline turns a note from Simon into a song, which they sing together. Tears stream down her face as she plays her bass, while the Ice King obliviously drums out an uneven beat. This is one of the most emotional scenes in the series and one of the most emotional quotes (and song lyrics) in Adventure Time.
