13 Reasons Why, Season 1 DVD
Editorial Reviews
Amazing slow burn teen drama based on the best selling novel of the same name, the show is controversial and definitely not for the feint of heart, it is carried by two brilliant performances from Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford
I’m so happy it will be released on DVD, especially being a Netflix original, which seems to result in lack of physical copies for many of it’s shows that don’t have Marvel attached to them, It’s just a shame that there’s no Blu-Ray release but seeing as i am in the UK, something tells me the BD would be region locked anyway and there’s no sign of a region 2 release so i am forced to buy the region 1 DVD

JOHN THOMSON –
Based on Jay Asher’s novel, Thirteen Reasons Why is a well made mini-series (although they have announced a season 2, not sure if it’s a completely new storyline or picking up in the aftermath of this one) revolving around Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette), a not overly popular at school kid, who finds on his front door a box containing cassette tapes, recorded by a girl called Hannah (Katherine Langford) who he worked with at the local cinema, had become good friends with and who recently took her own life. The tapes instruct the listener to listen to them in order, then pass them onto the next person exposed on the tapes as one of the contributors to Hannah taking her own life. Hannah tells the listener there is another full set of tapes that will be released to the media or whoever if they do not follow her instructions. Clay was already having a hard time coping with her death, and is struggling to listen to each tape. He has no idea who the subject of each tape will be before he plays each one, and knows his tape will eventually play and doesn’t know how he will cope when he realises Hannah may well have killed herself because of something he did or didn’t do. He wants justice for Hannah each time he learns something, but is constantly told by his best friend who protects him to some extent from the jock bullies of the school, to listen to the entire tapes first. To further complicate matters his own mother has become overly protective, insisting they eat breakfast together and clearly wants him to open up to her so in her mind he won’t commit suicide. Hannah’s parents are also in the anger part of the grieving process and are making noises about suing the school.

I read the book the year it was released…and, though controversial, I loved every minute. I’ve been wanting to watch the show for awhile now and finally found the time this week. I was blown away. While it drifted away from the book story-line, the show was absolutely everything it should have been…heartbreaking, engrossing, frustrating, anger-producing, funny, heartwarming, and most importantly, real. Beyond that, the acting was superb.
