There’s something very different in the new season of Billions. The type of dialogue of some of the actors has changed, or their style of delivery has changed. I can’t put my finger on it, but it’s like they’re reciting poetry, or they’re delivering the lines in a mechanical way. I didn’t notice it with everyone, or even in every scene, but something has changed. My guess is a new writer has entered the picture, or some change in director. I’m not a fan of whatever is going on, but I love the show regardless.
In watching the 3rd season I just realized an interesting corollary to Twin Peaks (any installment). Someone pointed out in a Twin Peaks review that everyone has something to hide in that series. Who do you root for, because everyone has sinned? Everyone has something to hide, from the outright “bad guys” to the sweet Peggy Lipton restaurateur character.
What unfolds in the 3rd season of Billionaire is a similar moral quandary. Every character has compromised their integrity in some fashion. Everyone has “broken bad”. Even the one single character who was not a party to all the underhanded shenanigans carried out in seasons 1&2 (if you’ve seen season 3 you know of whom I speak) has now sold their soul to the devil.
So now, more so than Twin Peaks, the question again is; “Whom do you root for?”. Who are the good guys and who are the bad guys? Is State Attorney Chuck Rhoades, because of his position of power and his oath to serve justice, actually a more despicable character than system cheating, market manipulator, receiver of inside information billionaire Bobby Axlerod?
I guess we really can’t just root for the good guys because everyone has sinned. So if their is no hero why do we watch the show? One answer; “The show is very much like real life so we automatically relate to it. We live in an era when virtually all systems are corrupt.” I bet the writers understand this and wrote to it.
I love this show, all 3 seasons. Have continued to watch even though I detest Paul Giamatti. Usually if he’s in a show, I will not watch it because the sight of him or the sound of his slithery voice completely repels me. This show is good enough that I just avert my eyes & sing out loud so I can’t see or hear him when he’s in a scene. Then Damien Lewis comes on & everything is right with the world again.
The plots are easy to follow because they’re basically schemes agains anyone who’s costing them money or power. The friend of your enemy is your friend, etc. Lots of Greek tragedy input.
The character to really beware is Axe’s company psychiatrist/Rhoades’ wife. She’s all over the place to make sure she has room to play her complicated games. If anyone ever actually constricts her, watch out. She’s not a dominatrix for nothing. She’s the real “head case” & the real danger.
