Normally I approach remakes or reboots of existing media with trepidation. Either too much is changed and there¡¯s no semblance of the original work¡¯s soul, or too much is the same and in both cases the new effort feels pointless. So I¡¯m glad to be able to say that I¡¯ve thoroughly enjoyed this new take on Dynasty more and more with each consecutive episode.
From the diversity of the cast, to the modern changes, like Steven¡¯s sexuality no longer being a point of contention between him and his father, instead the friction resting on sociopolitical ideals. Or Sammy Jo going from a young blonde woman to a gay Latino man, these changes intrigued me from the outset, as well as some other surprising or inspired casting choices. Elizabeth Gillies shines as Fallon Carrington, and the character feels more fleshed out and has more bite from the outset than the original show¡¯s Fallon did, as much as I love that character. Nathalie Kelley as Cristal is also a highlight, as a more assertive and active take on the original Krystle.
Elements of the original show¡¯s plots and developments are present here, with enough of the foundation of the original for long time fans to appreciate, and plenty of twists and surprises to keep fans old and new guessing. There are also lots of Easter eggs and nods to the original littered throughout via scenes, lines, music ques and set elements.
There¡¯s plenty to appreciate in this show, and so much potential for it¡¯s future that I hope it gets the opportunity to realize. I love the cast, and I¡¯m fully invested in the plot, more so than I have been for any show in a good while. You don¡¯t have to know anything about the original show, and if you¡¯re a die hard fan of the 80s classic, there¡¯s no reason to balk at this fresh take on the characters. What could have been a huge misfire has really come into it¡¯s own, and if you¡¯re dead set on loathing it¡¯s existence anyway, at least accept that the original show still exists and is untarnished by this more contemporary exploration.
The first season of Dynasty, an American television series based on the 1980s prime time soap opera of the same name, originally aired in the United States on The CW from October 11, 2017 through May 11, 2018. The season was produced by CBS Television Studios, with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage serving as showrunners. The pilot, which was announced in September 2016, was ordered to series in May 2017. On November 8, 2017, The CW picked up Dynasty for a full season of 22 episodes. On April 2, 2018, The CW renewed the series for a second season.
Season one stars Elizabeth Gillies as heiress Fallon Carrington, Grant Show as her billionaire father Blake Carrington, Nathalie Kelley as Blake’s new wife Cristal, and James Mackay as his gay son Steven, with Robert Christopher Riley as chauffeur Michael Culhane, Sam Adegoke as tech billionaire Jeff Colby, Rafael de la Fuente as Sam Jones, Cristal’s nephew and later Steven’s fianc¨¦, and Alan Dale as Joseph Anders, the Carrington majordomo. Notable recurring characters introduced in season one include Alexis Carrington (Nicollette Sheridan), Blake’s ex-wife and the estranged mother of Steven and Fallon; Claudia Blaisdel (Brianna Brown), the unstable wife of Cristal’s former lover; Monica (Wakeema Hollis) and Cesil Colby (Hakeem Kae-Kazim), Jeff’s sister and father; Liam Ridley, a stranger Fallon marries to thwart Jeff’s plot against her; Iris Machado (Elena Tovar) and Alejandro Raya (Luis Fern¨¢ndez), Sam’s parents; Ted Dinard (Michael Patrick Lane), Steven’s ex-boyfriend; Melissa Daniels (Kelly Rutherford), Steven’s former lover; and Hank Sullivan (Brent Antonello), Alexis’ lover who is posing as her and Blake’s kidnapped firstborn, Adam.
The new Dynasty is great! It has all the drama, fun and plot twists a soap opera should have.
The casting is very good and I like how diverse the cast is. Liz Gillies is brilliant as lead character Fallon.
There are fun Easter eggs to the 80’s Dynasty and the fashion is really Dynasty worthy!
I would much recommend Dynasty to fans of series like Revenge and Gossip Girl.
