Growing Pains, Season 1

This four-disc set offers two welcome opportunities to be reunited with the Seaver family. The first is all 22 episodes of this 1985 sitcom’s inaugural season, which resurrected the career of failed talk-show host Alan Thicke, and catapulted Kirk Cameron to teen-idol status. The second is a near-half-hour present-day campfire chat with all the cast members, including Joanna Kerns (conflicted working mom Maggie), a hearty and seemingly healthy Tracey Gold (brainy daughter Carol), and Jeremy Miller (precocious younger son Ben). Joined by writer Tim O’Donnell, they share memories of how each was cast, their fond memories of the show and dealing with fan adulation. Growing Pains did not really suffer any. It cracked the Top Ten in its first season, and while the cast members are not the most natural comic actors, by season’s end their bond is palpable and the characters really do seem like family. Thicke’s Dr. Jason Seaver is a sitcom anomaly: a work-at-home dad. He has moved his psychiatric practice into the den after Maggie takes a job as a journalist. His belief system is put to the supreme test by his three children, especially 15-year-old Mike (Cameron), whom Maggie calls “a hormone with feet.” In the pilot episode, no sooner does Jason agree to give Mike more independence, then Mike is jailed for joyriding in his older friend’s car.

With the practical mom of an unusually impractical family back in the workplace after 15 years as a homemaker and her psychiatrist husband at home with the kids, the difficulty–and the comedy–grows.

Growing Pains, Season 3

As the hit comedy series continues in its third season, family dynamics hold court. In a two-part episode, Jason’s ability to look at the bright side turns a family vacation in Maui ¡ª a vacation that would be called a disaster by anyone else’s standards ¡ª into a positive experience. Back on Long Island, when their house is burglarized, the Seavers realize their sense of security is worth more than any stolen possession. How will they recover that? Plus, Maggie gets hired at a TV station, Mike runs for student body president of his high school and, when Carol turns in an exam that she bluffed her way through because she didn’t study and gets an A+ on it, she has serious doubts about the importance of grades and education. What will Mike say to quell her concerns? Of course, these stories and more are executed with humor and heart as Growing Pains continues to delight viewers. Guest stars include Kelly Hu (The Vampire Diaries).

Growing Pains, Season 4

The more things change, the more the Seavers stay the same! And they do change, as the fourth season of the beloved family favorite sees Mike (Kirk Cameron) starting college, Carol (Tracey Gold) starting to get cynical, Ben (Jeremy Miller) starting to date and Maggie (Joanna Kerns) about to give birth! While Jason (Alan Thicke) does his best to keep the family grounded, he finds his clan starting to chafe at their old roles ¨C like when he tries to actually ground the ¡®grown-up¡¯ Mike. As father and son reconcile their changing roles, Maggie confronts her fears about labor and Ben has to deal with his new baby sister, Christine, stealing his birthday and his place in the family. But Big Brother Ben has more than enough Seaver sense to rise to his new role while the clan confronts new challenges, along with some special co-stars such as Jane Powell, Matthew Perry, Dick Van Patten, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Brad Pitt!

Growing Pains, Season 5

It¡¯s a good thing they¡¯ve got each other, because Growing Pains’ fifth smash season doesn¡¯t hesitate to throw some mighty big challenges at the Seaver clan. As if Mike¡¯s (Kirk Cameron) sudden engagement to Julie, the family babysitter, wasn¡¯t enough, Carol (Tracey Gold) finds her college plans derailed, while Ben (Jeremy Miller) starts to take after big brother Mike in all the wrong ways! It¡¯s a good thing youngest Seaver Chrissy is still too small to put Jason (Alan Thicke) and Maggie (Joanna Kerns) through their paces – so far! Among the special guests found in this 3-Disc, 26-Episode collection are Jane Powell, Gordon Jump, Hank Azaria, Jennie Garth, and Chelsea Noble in a season that starts with near-matrimony and ends with a real funeral. Along the way, Mike returns to high school… as a teacher, Carol begins to mend her broken heart, Ben tries his hand at filmmaking, and Jason and Maggie revisit their domestic arrangement.

Moving out does not necessarily mean moving on, as Jason (Alan Thicke) and Maggie (Joanna Kerns) discover when Mike (Kirk Cameron) and Carol (Tracey Gold) move to the Big Apple together ¨C to be roommates! As that arrangement goes about as swimmingly as the elder Seavers could have predicted, Ben (Jeremy Miller) struggles with life lessons about the true rewards of high school vanities, while Chrissy (Ashley Johnson) struggles just to get noticed by her busy family. Among the tricks and treats found in this 24-Episode collection is a special two-part anthology of Halloween frights as told by each member of the clan and an epic three-part trip to Europe that sees Maggie in deadly medical danger while Mike flirts with a fellow traveler. Meanwhile, back in the States, Carol learns something about life on the other side of the tracks, and Maggie must confront her father¡¯s mortality.

Growing Pains, Season 7

The Seavers say sayonara in their seventh and final season in high style by welcoming a new member to the clan ¨C played by Leonardo DiCaprio! As Mike (Kirk Cameron) prepares to attend teacher¡¯s college; Jason (Alan Thicke) suggests that he teach some remedial classes at the local community center. Uneasy goings for Mike turn around; in part thanks to his best and brightest student; Luke Brower (DiCaprio). But Mike discovers that Luke has a secret ¨C he has no family or home. And so; Luke soon finds himself at home with the Seavers; in Carol¡¯s (Tracey Gold) room. Too bad Mike forgot to tell Carol! Meanwhile; Carol has a new old beau; Dwight (Christopher Burgard); Ben has a crush on Sasha Serotsky (Academy Award? winner* Hilary Swank); and Chrissy (Ashley Johnson) wants a pony. But big changes are in store; as Washington comes calling for Maggie (Joanna Kerns); and Luke¡¯s trucker dad (Gary Grubbs) makes a pit stop at the Seavers¡¯.
