The series is BASED on a true story. I don’t believe that all the episodes are TRUE stories. I believe that they are created with a bit of truth to them. I don’t really care for the sex scenes as they are somewhat graphic. It would be enough just to imply what is happening. Of course, I feel that way about heterosexual scenes as well. I am 65, but not a prude. The nudity is not really necessary either. Those are the two glaring bad things about the series. Otherwise I think it is a real hoot! I really like how they take a character and show their life events that led them to being in prison. I imagine that some of these people’s lives are based on true events. I got a bit tired of the show in the beginning episodes of season two but continued to watch. If I watch it on my computer, then I don’t have the option of having closed captioning which helps be since I use hearing aides. Anyway, I will continue to watch until the end of the season, but not like some of you that became so involved that you did a marathon of all the seasons.

What really has surprised me is that Jodie Foster is the director! I also like seeing some of the actresses and actors from other shows in it. Also, I must say that I think the acting is very above average! It’s not a canned comedy/drama!

An important series on so many levels. First, it is refreshingly entertaining playing opposite a diet of drab, boring, safe, repeat lawyer/doctor/detective/crime/violence/car crash/shoot’em-up pap written by men for male audiences that is supposed to pass for ‘entertainment.’ Second, the humor is breath-taking, jaw-dropping, authentic, sophisticated, and funny, unlike so much unfunny laugh-track comedy these days. Third, there is enough low-brow appeal to reach a wide audience to, Fourth, and most importantly: reach a large audience with important messages, such as, a. female characters are interesting, b. female audiences do exist, c. racially diverse stories and audiences also exist, and d. the US prison system is for some (or many) populations ridiculous, arbitrary, destructive, gratuitous, and costly. Finally: What a fabulous piece of work! Bravo Kerman, Foster, and all the actresses and stories we never see anywhere else on TV or in the movies.
