Captain Jonathan Archer, son of the warp engine pioneer Henry, assembles a crew and takes the new starship Enterprise out into the heavens.
Although I hold the original Star Trek series near and dear to my heart, I did not enjoy the subsequent Trek franchises for various reasons (Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager…). When Enterprise came out I had already tired of the other franchises and figured that since Scott Bakula was heading it up (I hated Quantum Leap!), I REALLY wasn’t interested, and therefore never even gave it a first look…never. Last month on a whim, I decided to make use of my Amazon Prime account and watch a couple of the episodes for kicks and grins, and had literally NO expectations at all. I WAS HOOKED…COMPLETELY. I watched all 4 seasons, practically EVERY DAY until 2 and 3am. I lost track of time, but I think I watched the entire 4 seasons in a month! I didn’t even do that with the original series, which I have also been watching on Prime! It was by far the most absorbing of all the series, and had the best effects and story lines of all of the Trek franchises. I only wish they had more! What is funniest, is that as I watched season 4 and was coming to the realization that it was all coming to an end, I started getting depressed! I can say, though, that I was pleasantly surprised that the writers actually did a good job of ending the series in a way that made sense, tied directly into the overall Trek franchise time lines (original series and Next Generation) and was pretty satisfying for a pretty die-hard Trekkie.
If you’ve never seen the Enterprise series, I’m not gonna tell you anything regarding its premise. All I’m gonna tell you is that if you consider yourself a Trekkie too, it’s totally not a waste of time. A couple weeks ago I turned another friend who is a Trekkie onto Enterprise. He had never seen it either, but actually liked the other franchises. He started watching it a week ago and is HOOKED too! He agree that he thinks it’s the best of the Trek franchises too!
I’ve been semi-binge watching STE over the past few weeks since I discovered the entire thing was included with my Amazon Prime account. My wife is a big fan of TOS and TNG, owns a bunch of collectibles, so it’s been something good we’ve shared. She actually hipped me to Enterprise and told me it was a great series (though she didn’t get a chance to watch the whole thing when it aired due to work). I was originally put off by the idea of going BACKWARDS with the story of ST and since I’m a tech guy, I didn’t want to see pre-TNG tech.
I was an idiot. This series was SO. SO. SO. GOOD. Wasn’t a big fan of the last episode – I’d have loved to have seen this crew get a movie or two and some of the characters develop even more. I actually got a little sad when I started watching season 4 because in my mind I kept saying “wow… in X amount of episodes, this will be over.” I do think they could’ve ‘ended’ things a bit better.
But as for season 4 (specifically) – just about every arc in season 4 was well written. I liked the Vulcan arc especially. I did find the ending to the Temporal Cold War satisfying. It was actually good to see it all ironed out so that we don’t have anymore unexpected intrusions into the timeline.
Great series overall. Anyone who likes a good story will like this series.
