Three Billboards is a remarkable film for two reasons. It contains virtually every dramatic device there is, from gratuitous violence to self sacrifice to betrayal to love. It makes the film tremendously varied and always interesting, as characters change sides, take matters into their own hands, and pay the price. No good deed goes unpunished, and life is a precarious state. In a small town, your enemy one minute is your ally the next, despite everything.
The other reason is that unlike America today, where doubling down seems to be everyone’s first reaction, almost every character in the film comes to a decision point and chooses against revenge or violence or retribution. For that, someone is saved, and not necessarily the decision-taker. So rather than a constant downward spiral of entrenched positions, payback and bitterness, there is instead a slender thread of hope and light, that humans have the capacity to think and reflect on the implications, not just react and lash out (though there is a lot of that too). Martin McDonagh has written a very full and fulfilling story in the best storyteller tradition: there is a message to it all.
