Vikings, Season 1 DVD
Editorial Reviews
This is an enjoyable historical fiction series. The historical accuracy is a bit wanting but sacrificed necessarily in favor of a good story. My favorite character is the Christian priest Athelstan (the name is borrowed from a 10th century Anglo-Saxon king). The crisis of faith and culture that Athelstan undergoes throughout the first season helps the viewer relate to the Viking traditions. The Vikings on the other hand, with the possible exception of Floki, are fairly cookie-cutter characters that you might find in any period sword-and-shield drama. I’m hoping those characters are developed further in the seasons to come. Another issue I’m having is that the punk hairstyles are a bit distracting. The Vikings were very meticulous and proud of their hair and beards. Depictions left by them show sculpted (probably with wax) mustaches and the like. I’m sure the half-shaved hair cuts are meant to give the show a unique style, but it seems out of place. It would be interesting if the History Channel did a spin-off series involving the Anglo-Saxons!
