Euphoria’s second season saw some unlikely couples written into the show, but these match ups would surely cause some debate amongst fans.
HBO’s Euphoria returned for season 2 earlier this year and perhaps the biggest surprise Sam Levinson had up his sleeve was the introduction of the romance between Nate Jacobs and Cassie Howard, which unsurprisingly was not a match made in heaven. They were completely toxic for one another.
Nate and Cassie’s hookup was an exhibition of toxicity and vanity and has prompted speculation as to what other surprising match-ups Levinson might be eyeing up for the third season of Euphoria. A few of these possible romances would actually make a ton of sense.
Rue & Elliot
One twist few fans saw coming in season 2 of Euphoria was Elliot and Jules’ fledgling romance. Rue and Jules’ relationship has been somewhat on the rocks for most of Euphoria’s two seasons, but fans could have been forgiven for thinking that it would be Rue and not Jules who would end up falling for Elliot’s charms.
The connection that Rue & Elliot share may not be as platonic as Levinson would like audiences to think and a love triangle of sorts has been neatly set up to continue to intrigue fans going into season 3. It would not be a surprise to see Rue & Elliot finally move to something different next season
Lexi & Fezco
Fans would argue that this couple is already a thing, but that is still up for debate. Lexi & Fez have as yet not actually declared in plain terms that they are in a relationship and with the dramatic conclusion to season 2 and Fez’s fate still undecided, the ‘Flexi’ fanbase may have to wait a little longer to finally see the two lovebirds’ couple up in a satisfying way.
The talented Maude Apatow’s portrayal of Lexie Howard has received plenty of plaudits and season 2 saw Lexi finally get the screentime many fans were hoping for. Such is the clamor for ‘Flexi’ that any other romance involving the pair would be an unpopular proposition.
McKay & Maddy
Revenge is a dish best served cold and no one could ever doubt Maddy’s capability in inflicting a world of pain on those who have wronged her. The easiest way for Maddy to get back at both Nate and Cassie would be to form a romance with McKay, even if revenge was the only thing at play in their relationship.
Similar to Nate, Maddy’s character arc is long overdue for some redemptive conclusion from Levinson, but due to both characters’ propensity in gravitating toward disaster, there will surely be plenty more dubious decisions to be made from both characters before the curtain closes on Euphoria.
Faye & Kat
Both Faye and Kat have been seen on the peripheries of the show in both seasons 1 and 2 of Euphoria. But the two characters could have an interesting opportunity to escape the trappings of a supporting role in the show by forming a very out-of-left-field romance.
Kat has flirted with broadening her horizons in a sexual context and Faye’s flawed but likable character would complement the adventurous Kat brilliantly. This prospective couple would be an unlikely but nevertheless intriguing one for season 3. What is not up for debate though, is that both characters are deserving of more screen time.
Jules & Maddy
One way of winding up Nate Jacobs would be for Jules and Maddy to get together. The two characters have already started to bond in season 2 and considering Jules had no problem hooking up with Elliot, Maddy could also be next on the list of romantic endeavors.
But one thing that is not in doubt in Euphoria is Maddy’s loyalty above everything to her friends, and whilst not being utterly inconceivable that a romance might be forged with Jules, it is unlikely that Maddy would betray Rue like Cassie betrayed her. Either way, the couple would make a lot of sense.
Rue & Nate
Rue certainly has both angels and devils on her shoulders throughout Euphoria’s two seasons. Leslie and Ali, though, are firmly positioned on the angel side of the equation, and Ali could easily go from being a paterfamilias figure to a step-dad for Rue in season 3.
Ali has struck somewhat of a one-note character thus far in the show and fans will be hoping that in season 3 his character is given more depth by Levinson. By coupling up with Rue’s mother, Levinson would be able to explore some more of Ali’s intriguing backstory.
Cassie & Ethan
Cassie is well overdue some luck in the love department and Ethan is a charismatic and charming alternative to Nate Jacobs. Ethan showed in season 2 that it is possible to get over heartbreak in a positive way, by lighting up the stage in Lexi’s play.
Ethan would be a sensitive and loveable departure from Cassie’s usual penchant for a bad boy and it is a hypothetical romance that would surely go down well with fans of the show. The relationship might be too wholesome for Levinson’s taste, however, and Cassie does not look like she is getting over Nate anytime soon.
Fezco & Rue
Fezco and Rue’s turbulent friendship is not only inherently platonic but resembles more of a familial dynamic. That is not to say that a romance between the two would be that far-fetched of a proposition, but it would take a lot of unimaginable twists for the two to couple up together.
Fans may be more worried about the fate of Fezco and Lexi than the prospect of Rue and Fezco getting together, but it could be argued that the two are made for each other and since they are not actually related by blood, it would not be too much of a taboo.
