Personal Quotes

(about being short) when I was younger, I definitely let it get to me. As a teenager, I was bitter and angry, and I certainly put these walls. But as you get older, you realize you have to have a sense of humor. You just know it’s not your problem. This is theirs.
I like animals, all animals. I won’t hurt the cat or the dog, or the chicken or the cow. I will not let others hurt them for me. That’s why I’m a vegetarian.
[after winning a golden globe for game of thrones [2011]] I was talking to my mom in jersey before I came out, and she said, “have fun, but have you met Mildred Pierce [2011]?” Guy Pierce is awesome. He will win.” So… I didn’t see Mildred Pierce, but I believe he was really good, and I loved our moms because they kept us humble.

I’ve never lived in an abandoned train station.
Writing is killed by too many cooks. Back in Humphrey Bogart’s day, it started with great scripts. You have a writer who writes a script, and that is your movie. I think that’s been watered down a little bit recently.
Any swagger is just defense. And when you’re reminded a lot of who you are — not in terms of fame, but as my body gets bigger and bigger — you either curl up in dark corners or wear it proudly, like armor or something. You can open its head and use it yourself before anyone else has a chance.
That’s one of the differences between theater and film — in theater, the actors have more control, and the disappointing thing about movies is that once you finish shooting, anything can happen, you know?
On TV, playing the same role for so many years, for me, I find it a bit boring.

I’ve been against television for a long time because I don’t think the quality of the writing is very good compared to the film, but the quality of the script has changed. HBO attracts a lot of great writing talent.
I’ve never been a huge comic book fan. Obviously, I’ve heard about these comics from friends who have read them, but I’ve never been a big fan of comic books.
Bad guys are complex characters. It’s always fun to play with them. You can get more. You don’t have a heroic code to follow.
So I wouldn’t say I was lucky. I’m lucky to find or attract very talented people. For some reason, I found them, and they found me.
I like to work with the same actors over and over again. This happens all the time. It’s inevitable, especially if you’re working with the same writers and directors, and you start to build an actor company. You are attracted to each other.

I’m lucky that I was brought up to be more accepting of myself.
I just think the less you know about an actor, the more seriously you take them as actors, because they disappear for a while.

Believe it or not, I was born in 1969, so I was a kid in the 70s.
Everyone asks me about will ferrell because I’ve known him for about three days. But he was very funny and quiet between takes. I think it’s interesting. I think a lot of great male comedians are introspective and quiet, which I appreciate. But when the camera is on, they can really turn it up. I really liked that movie, the end result of Jon Favreau being very interesting. I had a good time. This was taken in vancouver, a very beautiful city.
I lived in providence, Rhode Island, for six weeks. I didn’t know that providence had a long criminal history. But it’s a three-hour drive from New York so I can go home on weekends and it’s fun. This is the first time I’ve been treated with a serious prosthesis, which is interesting in itself. It piqued my interest in playing a role that physically changed me. It’s fun. I think the kids love it. I’m going to play a villain in a cartoon adaptation, so, you know, the usual rules don’t apply. You can have some fun.
[on watching his own movie in 2007] I tried. I’ve been working recently, so this summer I made a couple of movies, death at a funeral and loser, which I didn’t see because I was in Prague, where I didn’t make movies. They had already left the theatre when I came back. I haven’t seen these. When I see myself on the screen, I feel scared — sometimes I close my eyes — but I watch the movie purely out of curiosity, to see how the director did it. I’ve seen most of them.
On death at a funeral (2007) is awesome. Frank oz is yoda. He’s huge. It was a month in London. I was one of the few American actors on the cast. I just love it. Some scenes are difficult to finish. We laughed a lot on the set. We had a good time. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I hope I can show it to you. Because people say that about radio agents, they think it shows that everyone in the movie CARES about each other and gets along well. I think sometimes it shows. I believe this is reflected in the death at the funeral, because we had a good time.
In order to make a crazy generalization, many big movies are made in the commercial sector. Not art, but business: money-making machines. Many machines are not so interested in artistic value. I try to do something that makes me proud of my accomplishments. I think I’m lucky enough to be a professional actor, to be able to say that, to be able to choose my roles. I think I like interesting stories. I guess the more interesting stories don’t make much money. It’s bad, but it’s a fact of the film industry. That’s what I’m drawn to, but, heck, there are a lot of big budget movies that I love, that have artistic integrity, and I’d love to do any of them. But I’m just a little picky. I don’t want to be dragged into this crap.
“(2007, in” plastic surgery “(2003)) I lost my job, I have an apartment in Los Angeles, I don’t use my wife and I started renting a few months ago, my manager called and said” would you do this show called plastic surgery for two months, like eight episodes? I really wanted to go to Los Angeles and I wasn’t interested in making TV because I made a show called threshold and it was canceled and I just wanted to go back to work in film and theater. But I don’t know. They caught me when I was weak. It’s not that television is a weak moment, it’s that its timing works. I had never seen the show before because I didn’t have cable or anything like that, but I liked the people involved, and I met Ryan Murphy, who was the creative person behind the show, and he inspired me to do it. Because he is a very clever man. So I said yes. At the end of the meeting, I agreed, and I’m glad I did.

(standing on my toes, 2007) (Gary oldman was one of my all-time favorite actors in 2003, so when I heard he was going to be in this movie, I said yes. I think it’s a very interesting idea about dwarfism and genetics and so on. Unfortunately it’s a bit of a crash. It’s one of those things that actors can’t control. I’m having a great time. I’m working with Patricia arquette again. She auditioned with me. I think it’s gonna be great, really great. But then, I don’t know what happened after we both left, but I heard all kinds of stories about post-production, which was really a pity. That’s one of the differences between theater and film — with theater, actors have more control, and the disappointing thing about movies is that once you’re done, anything can happen, you know? They can turn tragedy into comedy. Things could fall apart, like this one. It’s a shame. That movie could have been great, but something bad happened, and that’s life.
Living in oblivion I just graduated from college. Many actors think that their first big break, they will get a movie or a TV show or something, they are ready for life. But you know, I made that movie, and then I went back to my day job, doing temp work, doing bad work to pay the rent. Other little projects came in, but they didn’t pay a lot of money, you know? You can’t do something like this every once in a while. No, it was slow at first. It took five years to get started. Until finally, I could say, “I make a living as an actor.” This is not what you expected.
That was my first movie. I was working in an office and I got a call from a guy named Tom. I thought it was a friend of mine who was making fun of me. Because I picked up the phone in my cubicle — it was a cubicle job — and this guy said, “hi, I’m Tom dicillo, and I was wondering if you could come in and read the movie I’m directing called life in oblivion.” Oh, no, at the time, it was called scenario six to take three, or some work name. Then I said [strong irony. “yes, of course, I will go tomorrow.” then I said some dirty words or something, and then hang up his telephone. About five minutes later, he said, “well, no, I’m really, hi, my name is Tom, I’m really in this film.” I feel very bad. So I almost gave up my first movie work. But it’s great. I come in for him to read, I read he gave me this role. I was lucky, this is my first movie. I have always been independent movie fan, that movie is independent, And there were some great actors. I was just beginning to really discover Steve busmy and his film, and Catherine keener, so I was really excited to do it. It was great. It was a great time.
(2007) lacey (2005) that’s great. I’m not involved with humans. There are a few, here or there, but mainly me and my horse and a couple of dogs in the isle of man. Charles sturridge. I know him very well. He is an incredible man. Two years after the film was released, as part of Samuel Beckett’s 100th birthday celebration, we finally made Endgame. We are still in touch. I really enjoyed the experience. He is a very intelligent and creative person. I’d love to work with him again… I have to say, working with animals is hard. We did the same thing with Underdog. Your pockets are full of bacon and you have meat hanging from the top of your head, so the dog looks like it’s looking into your eyes, and there are trainers standing next to you, who have to shout commands before you say your lines. It’s slow. This is what they say: “don’t work with children or animals.” I’ve done a couple of movies, two of them, especially with animals, and it’s slow going. But the end result somehow worked.

It was written by a good friend of mine, Tom McCarthy, and directed by him. We’ve been trying to make that movie for a while. That’s great. Tom wrote for three main characters: bobby cannavall, Patricia clarkson and myself. So whenever we have time, we gather in someone’s living room and read through the latest draft. It paid off in the end — it took us a while to get the money, so based on our reading, Tom could rewrite the script many times. And then when the money came in, it all happened a little fast… This is entirely Tom’s play. What’s interesting is that a lot of people think it’s my story, it’s biographical, or I co-wrote it. I find it a bit funny – I think it has a lot to do with my size. I find it strange that people immediately assume that this is my story or that I co-wrote it, but it’s not. I’ve never lived in an abandoned train station. I worked with Tom four or five years ago, and before we made the movie, we really enjoyed working together, and Tom thought it would be a good idea for me to do that part, I think.
I feel very lucky; Although I hate the word lucky. “It reduces the cost of a lot of hard work. I lived in an apartment in brooklyn with no heat and ate in a bar bar — I don’t think I considered myself lucky. Do $50 plays, try to be a real artist, reject ads, they want a leprechaun. To say I’m lucky is to negate my efforts and spit on the guy who froze his butt in brooklyn. So I wouldn’t say I was lucky. I’m lucky to find or attract very talented people. For some reason, I found them, and they found me.
