The Jazzagals are a fantastic part of Schitt’s Creek – but sometimes, this singing group doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense.
While this group seems pretty easy to read at first glance, the more you think about the Jazzagals the more unclear certain aspects of the group start to become.
Most Of The Jazzagals Aren’t Named
One of the most confusing things about the Jazzagals is simply who is in the group. It’s unclear who the Jazzagirls are, and most are unnamed and get no storylines. Even though The Jazzagals appear in the show numerous times, the only ‘gals’ that are named are Moira, Twyla, Jocelyn, and Ronnie.
However, each time the group is on the screen they are surrounded by a bunch of other women. Many of these women even take on big roles within the group but we don’t even know their names.
They Wanted Johnny To Join The Group
In Season four of the show, after Moira had been a Jazzagal for a while, her husband Johnny makes an impression on the Jazzagals. One day when he visits Moira during a rehearsal, Johnny shows his vocal skills off to the group. They are very impressed by his deep voice and want him to become a permanent member.
Ultimately, Johnny decides he shouldn’t join his wife’s group but it’s weird that an all-girl singing group would specifically ask a man to join.
They Didn’t Want To Go To Twyla’s Dinner Party
In season 3, during a rehearsal, Twyla announces to the Jazzagals that she will be hosting her annual mystery dinner party that weekend. Twyla is very excited about the party and hopes that her fellow group members will be in attendance. However, Jocelyn reveals that none of the girls plan on attending the dinner because the parties aren’t that fun.
Shockingly, the women that work and perform with Twyla every single week wouldn’t want to support her and attend her dinner party, even if it is boring.
They Were Good Enough To Perform In New York
When the Jazzagals are first introduced in Schitt’s Creek, Twyla tells Moira that they performed in New York City in central park for the Little Towns Big Voices Festival. While Schitt’s Creek is a little town, the Jazzagals’ voice isn’t that big.
They do have some talent but it does not seem like the group would be good enough to qualify for a festival in New York City. Especially because the group seems to be much more focused on having fun than singing well.
Jocelyn As The Leader
Jocelyn is the founder of the Jazzagals as well as the leader of the club. She is often seen taking charge at rehearsals and appears to handle all of the logistics and decisions for the group. While she appears to be a good leader, it seems out of character for Jocelyn to guide the group.
Jocelyn is such a busy person so it’s hard to understand how she would have the time to properly lead an A Capella group.
Alexis Never Tries To Join The Group
Considering how community-oriented Schitt’s Creek is and how little there is to do, it’s very surprising that Alexis never auditioned to be part of the Jazzagals. In season five, when Moira and Jocelyn are casting actors for their upcoming production of Cabaret, Alexis auditions for the lead role.
This shows that Alexis has an interest in performing. She also reveals that she recorded a song before her family moved to Schitt’s Creek, which indicates that she has an interest in singing – even if she’s not particularly good at it.
The Casino Trip
In season 5, The Jazzagals decide to take a bus to a nearby casino to watch a Poison concert. The women take this trip as an opportunity to let loose with some gambling and partying.
One of the most shocking parts of this whole trip is Jocelyn’s behavior. She acts so out of character on this trip that she ends up cutting off her hair and returns to Schitt’s Creek with a whole new look. Of course, this is played as her attempted to recapture some of her youthful style, but it’s still a bit extreme.
In season 2, Moira learns about the Jazzagals for the first time when she spots them hanging out together at the town cafe. In true Moira Rose fashion, she tells Jocelyn that she is “offer only” and that she will not audition for the group. Luckily, for us, she ultimately decides to audition.
While this scene is very funny, it’s hard to believe that Moira would sing so poorly at her audition. Everyone in the audience is surprised by Moira’s song choice and bad performance – especially as she sings so well in another episode.
They Aren’t Very Involved In The Cabaret
In season five, Jocelyn and Moira direct a local production of the musical Cabaret. The musical stars Stevie and Patrick and various other people living in Schitt’s Creek. It’s very weird that Stevie was cast as the lead considering she isn’t a part of the Jazzagals and the production is being helmed by Moira and Jocelyn.
It’s also doesn’t make any sense that the Jazzagals aren’t very involved in the musical in general. Even though you can see Twyla in one of the numbers, the group doesn’t appear to have a big presence.
Moira Doesn’t Know Everyone In The Group
In the final season of the show, the Jazzagals are throwing a party for one of their members. To celebrate they get a cake. However, Moira thinks the cake is for her and cuts into it. This scene revealed that Moira doesn’t even know her group members.
While it’s widely acknowledged that Moira is very self-centered and lives in her own world it is still shocking to discover that she wouldn’t even know the name of a woman she had been working with for years.
