Jason Todd has been on a downward spiral in Titans. How long can he hold off before the DC series triggers the inevitable Red Hood storyline?
Will Titans pull out the Red Hood storyline for Jason Todd in its upcoming third season? First introduced in Titans debut run when he saved Dick Grayson from some armed goons, Jason Todd has been one of the DC series’ most compelling figures. True to his comic iteration, Todd is more of an unruly wildcard compared to the more diligent Dick Grayson, and in true Titans style, Jason’s rebellious streak is ramped up to the point where he watches pornography on the Bat-computer and shouts “Titans are back bitches!” down the lens of a TV camera. Clearly, Todd has some growing to do as a superhero, and this is why Bruce Wayne puts him under Grayson’s (night)wing in Titans season 2.
And Jason certainly does mature during this time, although perhaps not as in the way Bruce hoped. Jason Todd begins his roller coaster season 2 journey angry at Dick for not letting him off the leash. Determined to prove himself, Todd gets captured by Deathstroke and the other Titans are forced to save him, but during the course of the rescue Todd is dropped from the window of a skyscraper. Were it not for the intervention of Conner Kent, Bruce’s second Robin would be little more than feathers on the pavement. This near-death experience shook the usually cocky and brash Todd to his core. Already in a fragile mental state, Titans season 2 rocked Jason further with the revelations that Dick “killed” Jericho and Rose was only with the team as a mole. Having taken all he could, Todd struck out alone.
With Titans’ Jason Todd in such a bad place, season 3 could be the perfect time for the character’s long-awaited Red Hood storyline. In the DC comics, Jason is brutally killed by The Joker but resurrected via Lazarus pit (what else?) before becoming a new, more violent vigilante called Red Hood. Despite waging a war against crime like every other masked hero in Gotham City, the Red Hood kills freely and attracts the ire of Batman for resorting to such violent methods. Titans fans have been discussing a potential Red Hood storyline since the very first season, and Jason Todd actor, Curran Walters, has expressed a willingness to explore that idea.
The Red Hood arc feels like the only logical direction for Jason Todd in Titans season 3. The first season explored Todd as an out of control sidekick and season 2 developed his emotional insecurities, meaning the audience has already seen the light and shade to Todd’s personality. Season 3 should be looking to combine the two into a nice shade of blood-splattered, morally questionable gray. Titans’ season 2 finale didn’t hint as to what the future might hold for Jason, but it can be assumed he would end up back at Wayne Manor before long. The Deathstroke debacle cracked Jason’s confidence, so he’ll no doubt be looking to prove himself once again, and this foolhardy attitude could put him directly into the path of Joker and an untimely death towards the start of Titans season 3. Since no Titans fan is going to be fooled into thinking such a scene would be the end for Jason Todd, his return as the Red Hood could come before the season is out, perhaps helping in the final battle against Blackfire. Should Titans then continue for a fourth outing, Todd as Red Hood would be the obvious villain.
Titans is likely to cover the Red Hood comic material sooner rather than later simply because it’s Jason’s most interesting story. The youngster’s career as Robin wasn’t particularly eventful prior to his mauling at the hands of the Joker, and Todd was far better as Red Hood than he was the Boy Wonder. Curran Walters’ character might’ve gone as far as he can in the Robin guise, and just like Dick Grayson before him, Jason needs to find a new identity.
